Obstetrics

Pregnancy Care

I would like to see you early in your pregnancy. The first visit should be at 8-10 weeks. At this visit I will perform a medical check-up and plan your pregnancy care with you.

You will have blood tests to check your Blood group and Full Blood count. I routinely screen for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Rubella, Varicella, HIV and Syphilis. I will also check your vitamin D, thyroid function and a urine sample for infection. I offer and recommend screening for foetal abnormalities and Down’s syndrome.

Subsequent visits for most women will be –

  • 4 weekly until 28 weeks
  • every 2-3 weeks until 36 weeks
  • weekly until birth.

Women with High Risk pregnancies such as twins, women with certain medical

conditions, history of adverse pregnancy outcomes or certain foetal conditions such as growth restriction will need to be seen more often.
I encourage you and your support person to ask any questions. We can discuss them during your visits.

To prepare for your first obstetric visit, please check that you have:

  • A referral from your GP
  • A copy of any recent blood tests or ultrasounds
  • The date and result of your last pap smear
  • Your Medicare card and health insurance details

I would like to see you at 6-8 weeks after birth of the baby to check your and your baby’s health and discuss contraception (birth control).
